Mass At The Point Of Decision - Part 2

Every executive has far too much to do. And far too many executives try to do it all. But great executives not only know that there’s always going to be too much to do, but that much of it, including Trash Can Fires, ought not to be done. And, if you pursue a narrowing strategy, you soon learn that with all the distractions of your role, the only solution to pursue greatness is a priority list of ONE. Great executives do not try to get everything done, they try to get one thing done by doing everything they can to achieve it. This is Mass At The Point of Decision. It is both dangerous and necessary.

In our last Executive Tools guidance, we highlighted the siren song of Trash Can Fires. Internal problems that inevitably crop up, systems that aren’t up to date, processes that aren’t being followed or are not current, reporting not done right, projects languishing. These are all normal occurrences in human organizations because they are human organizations.

The temptation for executives is to put out the trash can fires. They control all of the resources to fix the problem, they even control the problem itself. And it feels good to fix something. It’s good to have a well run, tight ship.
