How to handle a new manager

Ihave been with my company for 13 months, I like it and the industry.  We went through a major restructuring 3 weeks ago and the director who hired and managed me is now in sales as an individual contributor. My new manager is a a good guy, and  knows the industry and the company very well.  He is also a high-C.

What is the best way for me to handle the transistion?  Old boss is still here and our relationship is good.  New manager stays in his office all day and does not venture out to engage his new team.

I plan to submit a written report weekly showing:

  • accomplishments for the week
  • next week's plans
  • risks/ issues
  • items for management attention
  • planned time off

Is this a reasonable plan and are there any downsides to this proposal?

Thank you.

Please listen to all of our casts about bosses.  And then, modify your plan based on what you learn.
I think you're on the right track.

As a high C myself, he will probably love your written report.
As Mark and Mike suggest in the Professional Updates cast, I'd suggest asking for a 15 minute update. Don't ask for a recurring meeting. Do it once and if all goes well ask to do it again next week.
High Cs need relationships too, even if they don't think they do or won't ask or initiate the work to create the relationships. Initiating the relationship on your end, I think, is wise and will elevate you in the mind of the new manager.

They spoke in a cast about how to start an O3 with your boss, but I can't remember the method they suggested (or if they even called it an O3).
If possible, I would suggest you find that cast or get that advice from M&M, and institute it. Nothing beats a normal O3 in my opinion.

Thank you everyone for your suggestions.
The new boss really liked the format of my weekly briefing.  He has now started weekly meetings with his team individually.
