We quit doing holiday gifts in the last year, it was just getting to be too much. Essentially, we all exchanged a (cheapish) bottle of wine or coffee mugs. Not that personal, though I am sure appreciated. Now we go out for a leisurely lunch & enjoy each others' company.
In the past, I tried to get very specific gifts for each person, tree ornaments, a personalized letter opener...something that I knew the person would enjoy. One year I received a candy dish & I still use it at work.
Personally, I'd rather give paid time off as a gift. Send people home early, allow them an extra holiday-day to use on their kids' school break. (And I'd rather receive this gift too!)

Not sure if this qualifies as fresh, but every year I buy each of my directs a book. This year I bought them all "Hope is not a strategy". I like that everyone is reading the same book at or around the same time. They can discuss what they are reading and grow together. I I get myself a copy of the same book and read in advance, this way I can discuss the material with everyone as well.
